Famous witches & pagans
This page features famous witches and pagans.  As there is still, unfortunately, a public 'stigma' attached to being a pagan, this page will probably be fairly short on content. Also, I don't like the idea of posting rumors [other than spoilers] on my websites, so if I can't verify something, it will be labelled as a such.

Actress Fairuza Balk is one of the few more well-known actresses I know of that are openly Wiccan, and I quite admire her for it.  Ms. Balk is also a co-owner of an occult store, apparently one of this country's oldest, called
Panpipes Magickal Marketplace. The following is taken from the FAQ's at a fan website for Ms Balk, Farruza Balk, The Turquiose Goddess, and was apparently answered by the actress herself:
"Q: Being a Wiccan yourself, I was wondering what you think of the media's portrayl of the Pagan religions.
A: That's a pretty broad question.I think that they are better than they were in terms of trying to understand rather than simply judge, and for that i am very grateful. However, there is still a long way to go. People fear what they don't understand and it seems that it's alot easier for people to simply dismiss paganism as wishy-washy weirdness or evil rather than actually taking the time to look into it and try to understand what its really all about. Alot of people quite simply don't want to know or address the fact that paganism is one of the first of all known religions on our planet and that many newer religions have borrowed extensively from the traditions of paganism. At least people are STARTING to give it a chance and look into it though.Think about it ...even 50/60 years ago if anyone knew that you belonged to any church apart from a christian based church, in many parts of the world, that alone would not only ostracise you from your community and peers but could also very likely put your life in danger. I am sad to say in many places these conditions still exist. But the mere fact that soceity tolerates it at all is a very large step, don't you agree? The fact that I am pagan is something that I wouldn't deny if you asked me, however, it isn't something that I go around broadcasting everywhere. Not because I am not proud of it but because alot of people don't understand what that means, and as many of us know, celebrities do tend to be targets for media critisism and general weirdness. Let me make that a little clearer, alot of people are truly frightened by the mere idea of paganism and there are people out there that still beleive that anyone who practises the pagan religion are evil bad people and as such should not be allowed to not only practice their religion but also do not have the right to exist. This scares me. I have spoken to people even on this board who have been ostracised, threatened, and made to feel that their lives are in jeopardy because people found out that they were a practising wiccan or pagan. It's terrible. But on a lighter note, things ARE changing and hopefully for the better in terms of how paganism and wicca are percieved. There will allways be ignorant people who choose not to learn but only to condemn, but with time hopefully one day people will learn to be more open minded about that which they do not understand."
