Chat transcript 3/19/01
TV Guide Online: Tonight we'll be chatting with David Orth and Will Snow from The Lost World. Hi Guys! Thanks for coming!
Orth: Hi everybody.
Snow: Hello there. Thanks for having us.
Both: LOL
Question: Will and David are you anything like Roxton and Malone?
Orth: Actually, I think Will Snow is a lot like his character. He's a self reliant character.
Snow: Full of chivalry. I'd have to say I'm nothing like my character. I'm not near the hero qualities of Roxton. I'd be the first one out the door if there was a fire.
Question: David, will Veronica and Malone ever be together?
Orth: We have no idea. That's up to the writers. We want to keep the audience guessing. We're only in the second season, so we don't want to rush into anything.
Question: Do you like the sets? Ever pretend you're the Swiss Family Robinson or Tarzan?
Snow: Who's that to?
Orth: Will, do you ever feel like the Swiss Family Robinson? Let me put it this way, when I'm having an in depth conversation with Will, I do feel like I'm stranded on a desert island. Now the girls will rush to Will's defense.
Snow: That's great.
Question: How much input do the actors have on TV shows in Australia?
Snow: In terms of...? We have the luxury of being fully liberated in terms of how we play the characters. We're evolved and developed as the series has gone on. We have a very understanding team of writers and producers as we trust them. That's what makes it work.
Orth: Very eloquently put. We're very excited about the third season. There is going to be a shifting in plot development and characterization. So from that standpoint it could be a lot of fun.
Question: Will, where would you like the Roxton/ Marguerite relationship to go?
Snow: Pretty much down the track it's heading. The writers have taken up to perhaps exploring that relationship a little more in depth. So who knows. It's a love and a hate relationship build into one. It can take any one of those directions at any given time, but we'll see. What's written on the page for Rachel and I and how we play it aren't what it seems to be. We have a lot of fun to play it. I think we'll continue onto whatever there is between them.
Question: Will, in a recent interview one of your "cast-mates" said you were a "spunk -rat"...what is a "spunk-rat?"
Snow: David shouldn't be talking about me like that. Who said I was a spunk rat for starters? I've got no idea what a spunk rat is. It's not an Australian term.
Question: What is your most favorite episode?
Snow: David?
Orth: I really liked Absolute Power where Pete got to strut his stuff.
Snow: For me I have a lot of favorites. I enjoyed "Blood Lust", in season one, cause it was a different point of view from Roxton. I have a lot of favorites, as I said, for playing a slightly different performance from your own, or from the other cast members. That's the beauty of this show. Storylines can go anywhere.
Question: Do you find Malone a emotionally complex character? And speaking of which, anything new you can report between you and Veronica?
Orth: I guess, he's complex to the point that I find him [perplexing] myself. For all his confusion, he seems fairly ineffectual at times. I hope we're addressing that with the writing. He just doesn't know what he wants to be, an action adventurer, or a reporter. As far as Veronica and I go, nothing to report, but we're supposed to be becoming friends. I think we're having fun with a guy and a girl friendship, without injecting sexual tension. I'm not sure where it's going to go, but I'm quite enjoying it at the moment.
Question: What is the oddest jobs either of you have ever had? {before your acting careers?
Snow: I don't know if I can answer that. I've done a lot of things, but they've been fairly normal jobs. I was a commercial diver for 6 years. I had my own business here in Sydney.
Orth: I guess mine was I spent a couple of weeks unloading transport cars down at the fruit docks in Province.
Snow: That's why he's so built.
Orth: It's an interesting bunch of people.
Question: Are any of you guys married?
Snow: Neither of us are married. I don't think David is.
Orth: Not since I last saw you.
Snow: I'm in a relationship.
Orth: As am I.
Snow: A man is not a camel.
Question: Has there ever been a role that either of you have turned down?
Snow: No. I'm speaking for myself.
Orth: In all honestly in Toronto acting jobs are few and far between.
Snow: There are certainly things I prefer not to cast for though. You worry about those things if there is a sign of interest.
Question: Since it is said that you {Will} do a lot of your own stunts and run yourself "ragged" has there ever been one that you haven't done without trying or arguing with the producers?
Snow: LOL I've never argued with my producers. I've got a very good relationship as we all do with our stunt coordinators and our stunt people. They have a very good understanding of our stunt abilities. If it's too dangerous we just don't do it. But most of the time, we do our own stuff. The coordinators working on our show, Joseph and Don, I've worked with before. There is a very good relationship. They're good at what they do.
Question: David, what was it like to be on the Friday the 13 series?
Orth: That was a while ago. It was a lot of fun. That was very early in my career. It had a larger than life take on the show, much like ours. It was great fun.
Question: How did you both react to the news that Summerlee {Michael S.} would be leaving the show for an undetermined amount of time?
Snow: With a great deal of shock.
Orth: With great sadness. I really enjoyed working with Michael and I think everyone else did too.
Snow: He played a great character and it was always fun to bounce off of him.
Orth: I've always got my fingers crossed, you never know what could happen.
Question: Do you find it difficult to act around dinosaurs that aren't really there?
Snow: Initially yeah. You get used to it. We get the odd director that comes along and does great impressions of T.rexs attacking and helps us visualize. And the guys that do the CGI work are also very good at creating the performance of what the CGI dinosaurs will do. Quite often they're on set running around with a ball on a stick roaring.
Orth: Occasionally we haven't gotten as excited, but we're consistently nailing that energy now after practice.
Question: You both play interesting characters very well. Has your exposure on the show led to any movie offers that we can look forward to?
Snow: We're still waiting.
Orth: LOL
Snow: Make an offer out there someone.
Orth: Here's an actual answer. We're hoping the Lost World will lead to other things, but we're so wrapped up with the show with time commitments. But hopefully one day to different acting challenges.
Question: Are there going to be any guest stars?
Snow: Most of the guest stars on our show a lot of them are the cream of the crop of the Australian acting fraternity. How internationally known they are is another question. We've got some great characters that in the closing episodes we've got some great people that will be on show.
Orth: I think they've very well known in Australia and the caliber of actors and musicians on the show are great. We're all very fortunate that way.
Question: When does filming start for the third season?
Snow: No idea.
Orth: Yeah. Indications are it could be fairly soon.
Snow: It's very much the nature of the business though. Before you know it you're backing your bags and you're on your way somewhere.
Question: Either Will or David: Can you give us a hint about what the shift in characterization and plot development is going to be? PLEASE!
Snow: I'd have to say, you know, it's in the hands of the writers and the producers. I'd have to say, I think they will put a fairly strong emphasis on the relationships in the group. They can take the plots any direction. The flexibility of the show allows that.
Question: Do you visit your fans on the boards?
Snow: I'm guilty of not visiting the chat boards. I'm not very IT equipped. I struggle to switch on the electric razor.
Orth: I'm guilty of making a conscious choice not to visit. I read e-mail and surf the web, but I'm don't know how to get into a chat line and would you want to get into a chat line about yourself. It doesn't fall into my category of interesting topic to me.
Question: Do either of you believe the show needs to get more advertising and publicity?
Snow: I'm not there to see how it's promoted. It doesn't air in Australia. But New Line does a fabulous job.
Orth: I keep seeing the ads in Toronto. There are two channels that air it about two or three times a week. They're about to show "Voodoo Queen" here. Advertising is very expensive but I think New Line does a great job in promoting the show.
TV Guide Online: Thanks guys! We had a great time
Snow: I appreciate all your support and I hope you keep on watching. Best wishes.
Orth: And thanks everybody for tuning in and we'll do our best to deliver the goods. Some action, some comedy, some relationship building. Thanks so much.
