Here are some highlights from the interview:
Glenn Gordon Caron on pitching the show:
“So we (himself and Allison DuBois) have this idea we’re going to do this show, and we go to ABC, which is where this show started. We pitched the show and it was one of the best meetings I’ve ever had at a network. We walked out and I said, ‘That’s it, done.’ And she said, ‘No, no.’ I said, ‘No, you’re wrong! You’re wrong, that was good!’ And she said, ‘No’. That night they called and said, ‘You know what, respectfully, we’re going to pass. There’s like, a hundred of these shows.’ I was flabbergasted!
“About a week later we had a meeting at NBC and Allison said to me, ‘This is the one.’ We went in and pitched to Kevin Reilly. One of the great moments was as we were walking out of the room. As we were walking out of the room and everyone was shaking hands, saying goodbye, Allison looked at Chris Conti and said, ‘Oh drive carefully.’ I got back to my office and the phone is ringing and it’s (Chris, asking), ‘What did she mean? Did she tell you what she meant? Oh, by the way we’re buying the show. What did she mean?’ That’s how the show came into being!”
Patricia Arquette on playing a real person:
“I chose to actually not play her like herself, and we had that whole discussion beforehand. She was very cool with it. She was like, ‘No, I know what my real life is and the life of this character, (and) how different they are.’
Also, she’s much more comfortable with who she is today than I wanted my character to be. I wanted her to be more in conflict. Having this ability – how does she comes to terms with that within her family?”
