Shannen Doherty Set for TV Comedy

TV actress Shannen Doherty (news), who has been dogged by a "bad girl" image for years, is looking to make her first foray into comedy.

The former
Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed star has inked a deal to headline a show about a young woman who is stuck with a reputation of being headstrong and nasty but is nice and fragile at heart.

The project is set up at NBC-based production company Pariah TV.

"The idea has some reference to her own life and her own reputation about a girl who's known for being tough and bad but actually is a lot softer and maybe smarter and nicer than people realize," Pariah co-head of production Jessika Borsiczky said.

Doherty's persona on the Fox hit
90210 in the early 1990s blended with her highly publicized offscreen exploits and reports of clashes on the set. She hastily exited the WB's supernatural drama Charmed in 2001 amid reports of difficulties with her co-stars.

She offered a glimpse of her comedic abilities during a guest appearance on
The Ortegas, which Pariah is producing for Fox.

"She was very funny," Borsiczky said. "We think that her charisma comes across a lot more with comedy than anything else. We think it's a great way to showcase her."

Doherty next returns as the host of Sci Fi Channel's hidden-camera series
Scare Tactics.
