Being Tom Baldwin

First aired June 18, 2006

Tom visits T. J. Kim in an interrogation room.  The 4400 tells Tom what she’s told him is everything she knows, as he fiddles with something under the table.  She asks with some irritation what he’s doing.  Tom pulls a gun out, says he’s tying up the interview, and shoots her, leaving the gun on the table, then leaving the room. Shortly after, Jarvis tells Diana about Tom shooting Kim; of course Diana doesn’t believe it.  Jarvis says they have to bring him in, so Diana asks to pick him up herself; Nina agrees.

Isabelle walks slowly into a lake, fully clothed, eventually she’s completely under the water.  A man rowing in the lake sees her floating on the surface, and he gets to her body, tries to pull her out of the water.  Just then, her eyes open, scaring the man. Later, a wet, blanket-wrapped Isabelle talks to Shawn by the side of the lake, and tells him she was tying to teach herself to swim. He says “In your clothes?”  She says there are so many things she didn’t learn, because she had no childhood, and she’s made a list of things she’s trying to accomplish, rites of passage from childhood to adult. Shawn says he’ll teach her to swim in the pool at The 4400 Center.  Later she goes to see Richard, who tells her he’s going to bring Lily’s ashes back home.  She asks if she can go with him, but he says she needs to stay at The Center, she’s safer there, and that he needs to be alone.  Richard tells her to go to Shawn if she has any problems.

As Tom gets out of the shower, Diana arrives to arrest him.  He’s totally confused, and she tells him he killed T.J.  Tom says he didn’t do it, he’s been home all day; he took a half-day off from work for an appointment.  Diana says whatever happened, they’ll work it out, but he needs to come in.  He asks if he can get dressed, and she lets him, but he slips out of the bathroom window.  As Tom drives away a 4400, Boyd Gelder, is outside, watching, on a cell phone.  He tells an unknown party that Tom got away, and that’s he’ll take care of someone else.  Tom calls Diana while she’s back at the office with Jarvis, she says to come in, he tells her he’s not coming in, he didn’t kill T.J. and he’s going to find out what happened.

Diana goes to Marco, asks for his advice.  Marco he says to look at the situation as if Tom didn’t do it; what would she look for?  They think to check the surveillance tapes of the area.  When they get to that department, and ask for the detention area tapes, the person behind the counter asks if they’re joking, and told Marco got them an hour ago.

Shawn and Isabelle are in the pool; he complains its cold and she warms it.  Shawn observes that she has many different abilities. Matthew comes into the area, and tells Shawn he’s late for meeting.  Isabelle is disappointed to have Shawn taken away and Matthew appears to be unhappy with the Isabelle and Shawn being together.

Tom meets with Alana at her art shop; he tells her he’s in trouble, she needs to come with him, and grabs her arm.  She pulls it away, confused, as her cell rings, it’s Tom, on his way to her.  Confused and irritated, she asks who it really is on the phone, she knows its not Tom, because he’s standing right in front of her. Panicked, Tom tells her, no, it’s an impersonator; starts telling her things only he would know.  He’s just reaching the front door of the shop, and he gets there, Boyd runs out back, Tom follows.  Unfortunately, he meets Boyd in the alley behind the shop, but as himself, an older teenager, who replies that he didn’t see anything and keeps walking. Tom doesn’t make the connection until after Boyd’s gone.  Tom and Alana discuss the situation.  She tells him she could let the NTAC know the truth, but he says it won’t work, they won’t believe her, they’ll think she’s just trying to protect him.  Alana’s assistant comes outside, says there are people with badges everywhere in the front.  While the assistant waits for her, hearing their conversation, Tom tells Alana to go to home, lock up, and they create a password – the title of her favorite book – and he tells her not to open the door to anyone without the password.

Meanwhile Diana has seen Kevin Burkhoff. Burkhoff was lying down in the dark, and having migraines; he looks ill, but tells Diana not to worry, he’s been having them for years.  He’s taking a lot of promicin; and he tells her he’s sure he’s not the only one doing this; it’ll be a race to see who can use it first.  Diana is worried about his health, but he shows her he’s developing the power to heal himself, by stabbing himself in the hand with a scalpel.  It bleeds, but soon stops and heals.  He tells her it’s hit and miss; sometimes it works better than others.  She’s not trhilled, but will continue to assist him.

We see Shawn teaching Isabelle to drive a sporty red convertible, she clearly loves speed.  A somewhat green-faced Shawn is happy she’s happy, but says he’s driving home.  In apparently total innocence, she asks him to have sex, because it’s on her list. He’s somewhat shocked, but tells her no, Richard would kill him, and he would feel like he was taking advantage of her.  Later, Matthew asks about their lessons. Shawn says they’re not lessons, it’s totally innocent, and asks for Matthew not to talk about it again.

Tom has taken refuge with Shawn at The 4400 Center, who allows his uncle access to their 4400 database.  Tom finds Boyd.  Shawn also tells Tom that he can stay there if he’d like, but Tom gets the couch; it’s good to see the uncle and nephew friendly again.  Tom contacts Diana, and they agree to meet at a park, and she tells only Marco, but Boyd shows up as Diana, and starts shooting as at Tom, as Diana arrives on the other side of the park. They avoid getting hit, but Boyd runs away, and they aren’t able to catch him.  Diana and Tom decide to work together, because although Diana now knows the truth, again, she might not be believed, so Diana decides to throw in with Tom, and get to the bottom of this crazy situation.

Richard has stopped at a motel, and is relaxing on the bed while he talks to Isabelle.  He tells her he’s stopping at some of Lily’s favorite places.  She tells him Shawn is taking good care of her, he’s helping her learn to swim, and drive a car.  Isabelle mentions that she asked Shawn about having sex, but he said no because Richard would get mad.  In the hotel room, Richard becomes alert instead of relaxed, swings his legs on to the floor, and appears quite agitated, in a fatherly, “Omigod my daughter’s talking about having sex!’ way, and tells her they can’t talk on phone about this.

Tom arrives at the house, gives Alana the password, but before she opens the door, she gets suspicious because he doesn’t use his key - and she’s right.  It’s Boyd as Tom, and he kicks in the door, taking Alana hostage.  He calls Tom, who is in the car with Diana, tells him to come to house, because he’s only one that can identify Boyd; others would just be considered covering up for Tom.  Boyd says if Tom doesn’t come, he’ll kill Alana.

At The 4400 Center, Mathew brings Isabelle a pretty, clingy green dress, and encourages her to become closer to Shawn. She’s suspicious, and says that Shawn is nice, and she not be doing that for him and not to try to use him.  He tells her to enjoy it now, because in the future, Shawn and Isabelle will be on opposite side of an ideological divide.  As he leaves he mentions the dress doesn’t match her eyes, she should fix that.  She does – by changing the color of her eyes.

Richard says goodbye to Lily at her grandmother’s grave, and he pours her ashes on the ground at the gravestone.

While they wait for Tom, Alana tells Boyd, still disguised as the NTAC agent, that Nova has sent him on suicide mission.  He counters by saying Alana, as a 4400, should be trying to change things, not living with an NTAC agent.  She replies what is he doing?  He’s killed for Nova.  He says the world has to change, and they’ll use force if necessary.  Boyd hears a noise, gets up to investigate, and Alana grabs a vase, hitting him in the head, and runs away from him and towards the real Tom, who steps out of the kitchen.  The two men start to fight, as Boyd’s gun skitters away.  Alana picks it up, and she tells them to stop.  They do, and of course she has a problem telling them apart.  One Tom mentions Alana’s son, who had died in a car accident with his father, and the other says that Boyd would have read their files, and would know about her son.  Alana sees a gash on the side of Boyd’s head, and knows he’s the fake.  She tells him to kneel and Tom handcuffs him.  She’s disturbed to see he’s just a kid.

Richard comes to see Shawn when he gets back and pointedly says he’s glad Isabelle has Shawn as friend; says Isabelle may be seen as a beautiful young woman, but she’s still just a child.

Later, Shawn goes to his apartment and Isabelle is waiting there, in her pretty green dress.  He’s surprised, asks what she needs.  She says one thing; it’s on her list.  She approaches, and kisses him.  He’s clearly having a hard time saying no, as she is delighted to have her first kiss, then wants more.  They kiss, passionately…
