The New and Improved Carl Morrissey

Carl Morrisey works in the fish department in a Seattle supermarket.  He's one of the 4400, and was abducted a little over a year ago.  He's about 36, slightly-built, a nice guy.  His wife, Grace, is ecstatic that's he's returned.  Unfortunately, in just the short time he's been gone, conditions in their neighborhood have deteriorated   They're particularly upset by the damage done by local hoods in 'their' park, Bradley Park; it's the place Carl asked Grace to marry him over a decade ago, but now it's not safe to walk in at night, there's garbage everywhere, and walls and benches are covered by graffiti.  Carl doesn't think it's that bad; he walked through the park to get to work, and he decides to go through again later.  Unfortunately, Grace was right about how bad things have gotten, and two thugs try to mug Carl.  He's got only $7, which angers them.  Suddenly, a punch is thrown - and blocked.  Carl Morrisey appears to have super reflexes and strength, and fights the two, beating them down.  He goes back to Grace, amazed, and sure that this was the right thing to do; she's apprehensive.

Tom and Diana talk to Maia about her clairvoyance, but she doesn't know how or why it happens.  She knows that the tests they'll be performing may hurt, and is upset about it.  Maia asks Diana if she'll look in on her.  Diana is surprised, but agrees.

Richard and Lily decide to rent a place together.  While they're waiting at one nice place for the rental agent to return with the paperwork, Lily has a weird moment; she feels sick, the room looks all wavy and strangely-colored, and she hears some unusual sounds.  She tells Richard they have to get out, now.  Later, Lily tells Richard the baby didn't like the apartment.   She knows it sounds silly, but she feels like the baby is communicating with her.  He doesn't think it's silly.  Lily kisses Richard, and he kisses her back

The doctor on Kyle's case has called Linda and Tom in, and he tells them there had been a brief, momentary period of increased brain activity on Kyle's part last Thursday, and they're going to be doing some tests for more information.  While they're there, Tom asks Linda out to dinner to sign their divorce papers, have a little wine… cry a little.  Linda kisses him goodbye.  After she leaves, Tom asks if anyone visited Kyle Thursday night, and is told Shawn did. He goes to see Shawn at school, and his nephew denies doing anything to Kyle, and walks away angry, after Tom reminds him about the bird, and wants to know what's going on.  Nikki catches up with Shawn, with Danny following close behind, and tries to get Shawn to go with her and Danny to a movie; he declines and keeps walking.  Danny asks Nikki why she keeps trying to push Shawn into socializing, she says its because someone has to; he doesn't.  He says he's trying to give Shawn space to work it out. She walks away, shaking her head.

Danny goes to Shawn, while he's playing guitar in his room, and asks what's up between him and Nikki.  Shawn says nothing, and tells him to talk to his girlfriend if he has a problem with her.  As far as he's concerned, she's his brothers' girlfriend.  End of story.

Diana sees a tech-geek named Marco, who lets them know that the man Orson Bailey killed, Mr. Kensington, was the head of huge fraud scheme, similar to the Enron scandal.  In a bizarre way, Orson had saved the state from a huge multi-million dollar bailout.   Later, Diana looks in on Maia, who has been left alone in an exam gown in an examination room, by doctors.  Diana's quite irritated, and tells Maia she's going to have a talk w/ doctors when they come back.  Maia asks Diana if she can come live with her.  She says Diana is alone, and doesn't like it.  Diana is surprised, and resists, but says she'll think about it.

Carl Morrisey decides to clean the park, at night, when he's not working.  Suddenly, he hears crying, screaming, pleading.  A young girl is being held down by three men, and another is getting ready to rape her.  Carl tells them to leave her alone, they tell him to take a hike.  He tells them again to get away from her, and they come after him.  While we don't see any action, we hear it, and by the amazed look on the girl's face, Carl Morrisey must be winning again.  Later on, Diana and Tom see an article about this incident, and get more clues about the super-vigilante.

Lily is arrested at her former home, because she was looking in Brian's window at Heidi. While she's there, the baby 'talks' to her again, and in fact, that's how she'd been seen; in her discomfort, she knocked over a clay pot.  While she's in jail, Richard goes to see Brian.  He reminds Brian he loved Lily once, and asks him to drop the charges. He says if Brian does this, Lily will never bother them again. Later, Richard picks Lily up from the jail.  They share a romantic evening: Nat King Cole, a slow dance, candle light and a kiss… She tells Richard when she looked in the window, she saw Brian's family is happy, and Heidi doesn't need her now.  If Heidi does ever need her she'll be there, but her daughter doesn't need her right now, so she decides to stay away.  Lily tells Richard she wants to be with him, and the baby, because they make her happy.  He's glad for what she says, and says he feels the same.  Lily asks Richard if he wants to be with her because of her grandmother, but he says while it might have been that at first, now it's all her.

Dennis and Tom are having a drink, and Dennis tells him to sign the papers.  Tom missed the dinner-divorce paper date with Linda, and Dennis tells him it's time.

Back in Seattle, Carl Morrissey has a little tussle with his boss at the supermarket, which shocks the customers.  Later, Carl and Grace argue; he's adamant about continuing his 'fight', to clean up the park.  He thinks he's invincible.  She's scared of losing him again.  He's not convinced, and tells her not to worry, this is what he was meant to do.

Nikki visits Shawn while he works on his car in the garage; the motor is running.  She turns off his car, asking him if Danny talked to him about her.  He's doing his best to ignore her, but she touches a hot part under the hood,  burning herself, and he heals her.  They're standing very close.  And kiss. She walks out; neither of them say anything.

Tom sits in his office, pondering the divorce papers, then he signs them.  Diana comes to him, and starts talking to him about the vigilante.  She's eliminated the 4400 down to 13, then 2.  She then eliminates one - the one who doesn't work in the seafood department.  The witness, the blonde girl he'd save, had said her hero had smelled like fish.

It's night again, and Carl is in his park cleaning and painting handball walls and the bench he proposed to Grace on, when he sees one punk spraying graffiti on his freshly-painted wall.  He yells at him to stop, then realize there's a pack of kids skulking around him.  Meanwhile Tom and Diana are at the Morrissey apartment, questioning Grace, and she tries to deny what Carl's been doing, but she eventually let's them know he's in the park.  The three of them go to Bradley Park, find Carl Morrissey on his bench, stabbed in the stomach and bleeding heavily.  As Grace sobs not to leave her again, Tom calls for ambulance, but Carl Morrissey dies.  In the light of day Diana and Tom, sit in the park, wondering why Carl would be sent back with this power, thinking he's invincible, just to be killed.  Then they look at the entrance, and see the neighborhood has comes to the park, mops, buckets, paint in hand.  They've come to take back something that used to be theirs, and honor a slightly-built, nice guy.  They begin to continue Carl's work, cleaning up Bradley Park

Diana signs a bunch of paperwork, and takes Maia home with her.  Maia's suitcase was already packed.

Tom runs to Kyle's room, and is told by a crying Linda that Kyle's having emergency surgery; Kyle has fluid building up in skull.  Tom takes Linda in his arms and holds her, as Danny and Shawn show up.  Danny says his mother is on her way.  Linda says if they aren't able to relieve the pressure, brain damage is a real possibility.  Tom and Shawn exchange significant looks over Linda's head.
